Spiny Leaf Insects, Extatosoma tiaratum

We recently got these interesting insects from a local pet store. They didn't really know much about them, but I searched the web until I found what they are.

They are female, because males are rare in captivity, and both of ours look almost exactly alike--so the odds seem better that they are girls. They can reproduce through parthenogenesis, which means without the use of sexual reproduction. If either one does this, all of the resulting babies will be female.

I am feeding them blackberry leaves, which they seem to like.

A nice side shot of the head.

Nice smile!
